The Battles in Convention Center

Since I stepped into the convention Center, some people passed by me and wore a fake DragonBall hair paper crown, it attracted my eyes. In the stands of Bandi Company, a man, who wore a gold wig and black short-sleeve kungfu clothing dressed up as DragonBall character, Goku, was handing out a DragonBall’s gold hair shaped-liked paper crown to the visitor. There were some words printed on the backside of the crown. Those words were to promote their latest Dragon Ball film will be playing at the cinema in the future. After that, I put it on my head. As I walked around the show floor, at least three people asked me where I got the crown from.

I met a couple dressed like professional spies. After I took a photo with them and I decided to leave, the man suddenly caught my arm and gave me a business card from his pocket. He said to me that his friend and he had a stand in comic alley and welcomed me to visit their stand. I looked at the business card and sighed.

Companies also gave out a lot of free products to the visitor for the promotion. For example, DC company gave out free comics and posters. Discovery channel gave out a rope chain for their latest TV show’s promotion. In the Square Enix, they displayed all of their anima figures. Companies also hired some sexy model dressed like their figure to attract people visit their stands. If there are lots of sexy model in the convention, it will distort the original goal of the festival because people only focus on those models and neglect to enjoy into the culture.

Even though in NYCC or other convention, the sponsors would held competitions to encourage cosplayer who worked hard on their costumes. According to the article, “Anime Expo 2011 to Offer $25K in Cash and Prizes to Creatively Costumed Fans”, a Anime expro in North America will award $10000 for the 1st prize winner. The winner also gained some repute and had a chance to be those sponsor models. However, some people might thought that it is a way to show-off how rich they are because those cosplays spent a lot of money on expensive material to create the best costumes.

These events showed that cosplay activity was not only for share common interested, it also was a commercial battlefield.I’m angry with those people who were not respect in cosplay culture.
